Native Plant Seed Collection

Public Welcome Free Event Program/Speaker Presentation

Chris Kline, Director of Butterfly Ridge Butterfly Conservation Center will help us understand native plant seed collection and processing techniques. 

Chris will show us how to determine when seeds of different native plant species are ripe and ready to collect.  After collecting seeds outdoors, we'll have shelter available for demonstrations on how to prepare and store seed for  optimal germination. 

Gloves, long pants, and long sleeves are recommended.  This is a hands-on experience!

Please bring your own paper bags (lunch back size) for seed collection.

Join Wild Ones Honorary Director Heather Holm as she explores the nesting habitats, life cycles, pollen collection, brood rearing, and general characteristics of some of the most common native bees in eastern North America, while highlighting the pollination of native plants and the mutualism between native plants and native bees.

When creating and managing thriving habitats for native bees, many factors such as seasonal phenology, nesting strategies, and flower preferences must be considered—and with approximately 3,600 species in North America (north of Mexico), there are many unique aspects to keep in mind when managing successful landscapes for bees.

At this workshop, Chris Kline, President of The Polygonia Foundation, will walk us through the process of selecting and preparing native plant seeds for successful germination next spring.  

We have a wide variety of seeds on hand for participants to select, process, and take home for planting in the 2024 season.

Including common milkweed, false blue indigo, ironweed, buttonbush, rattlesnake master, wingstem, blazingstar, bergamot, and more!
